MILWAUKEE - St. Norbert College finished its appearance at the Wisconsin Luthern College Invitational at 3-0 by posting a pair of wins over former Midwest Conference foes Monmouth College and Illinois College at Time of Grace Center.
The Green Knights (7-2) topped Monmouth 3-1, winning 25-15, 25-11, 22-25, 25-20 and then bested the Lady Blues 3-0 by a 25-20, 25-20, 25-19 count.
In Set 1 against Monmouth, the Green Knights saw a modest 10-6 lead rupture into a 22-9 advantage following a 12-3 run en route to a 1-0 lead. The Green Knights jumped out to a 5-0 lead in Set 2 and eventually built a 20-8 advantage. Monmouth would respond by taking a 15-8 lead in Set 3 and held on despite the Green Knights cutting the deficit to two points three times late in the stanza. St. Norbert looked as it might need five sets to win as Monmouth led 15-8 in Set 4, but the Green Knights closed with an impressive 17-5 finishing kick to lock up the win.
A total of 22 players saw action against Monmouth, with the Green Knights hitting .178 with 51 kills against 23 errors in 157 attempts.
Casey Vaughan had 13 kills, while
Mari Szews added seven and
Annabel Stevenson and
Mickenzi Benter (pictured) had six apiece.
Heidi Colburn finished with 25 assists and six service aces, while
Andrianna Volz and
Flynn Puttin had three apiece. Vaughan finished with 16 digs, while
Kara Sowinski added 12 and Colburn 10.
Against Illinois College, St. Norbert jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the opening set. The Lady Blues cut the deficit to 16-15 but the Green Knights pulled away down the stretch for a 1-0 lead. Set 2 was tied 17-17 before the Green Knights took a 22-18 to get some breathing room and take a 2-0 lead. St. Norbert held a 14-11 lead in Set 3 and went on a 6-1 run to seal up the victory.
St. Norbert hit .243, with 40 kills against 14 errors in 107 attempts. Benter, Vaughan and
Anna Kudick had eight kills each to lead St. Norbert. Colburn finished with 28 assists and three service aces, while Vaughn and Volz had two aces each. Sowinski finished with 14 digs, while Colburn and
Kirsten Klatt had two blocks each.
