PLYMOUTH - St. Norbert College used a balanced offense to get things rolling in a 3-1 win over Lakeland University in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match at Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Green Knights (7-11, 2-4 NACC) snagged the Muskies 25-19, 25-10, 18-25, 25-21 behind three players reaching double-digit kills and a fourth with eight as they hit .267, with 48 kills and 17 errors in 116 attempts.
The first set was a tight battle, with the Green Knights holding a 15-14 lead. The Green Knights then went on a 5-0 run to get some breathing room behind a pair of
Bennett Kornaus kills and a kill from
Kade Nelson. St. Norbert never saw its lead shrink to less than five points the rest of the set to take a 1-0 lead. The Green Knights took control early in Set 2, jumping out to a 12-3 lead. A Nelson service ace put the Green Knights ahead 21-7 en route to a 2-0 lead.
Lakeland batted back in Set 3, building a 15-8 lead before cutting its deficit to 2-1. St. Norbert never trailed in Set 4, seeing a 12-11 lead move to 16-12 paced by blocks from Kornaus and
Barry Applewhite. The Muskies would tie the set 18-18 before the Green Knights came again, going on a 4-0 run as they closed out the match win on a Lakeland service error.
Kornaus had 11 kills, while Applewhite and
Kaden Kornaus added 10 kills each. Nelson posted eight kills.
Michael Whitney (pictured) directed the offense with 41 assists.
Bennett Kornaus finished with a match-high 15 digs, with
Ryan Conway adding nine and Whitney seven. Applewhite, Nelson and
Bennett Kornaus all had three blocks apiece.
Lakeland hit .096, with 36 kills and 25 errors in 115 attempts. Sage Xiong led the Muskies with 11 kills.
