RIVER FOREST, Ill. - St. Norbert College couldn't get over the hump and consequently lost a 3-2 decision to Concordia University Chicago in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match at Geiseman Gymnasium.
The Green Knights fell 26-24, 18-25, 25-23, 14-25, 19-17.
The fifth set featured 14 ties and six lead changes, but St. Norbert was serving with match point and leads of 14-13 and 15-14 but couldn't close out the win. The Green Knights trailed 16-15 and 17-16 and twice forged ties, but the Cougards got a block and kill to pull out the match.
The first set battled back and forth until Concordia scored the last two points to escape a 24-24 tie and lead 1-0. The Green Knights built a 17-11 lead in Set 2 and the Cougars would get no closer than four points the rest of the stanza as the match tied 1-1. St. Norbert jumped out to a 5-1 lead in Set 3 but Concordia eventually led 14-10 behind a 13-5 run. The Green Knights trailed 21-20 and 24-23 before Concordia again got the needed point to take a 2-1 lead. St. Norbert led 11-4 out of the gate in Set 4 and never trailed.
St. Norbert hit .326, tying a school record with 65 kills against 19 errors in 141 attempts.
Kaden Kornaus posted 20 kills, matching a career-high.
Bennett Kornaus added 18 kills, while
Kade Nelson and
Owen Knezevich added eight apiece.
Michael Whitney tied a school record with a career-high 55 assists. Whitney, Nelson and
Kaden Kornaus had two service aces apiece.
Ryan Conway and
Bennett Kornaus had 12 digs apiece, with Whitney adding eight. Nelson and
Barry Applewhite had three blocks each.
Concordia Chicago hit .279, with 65 kills and 24 errors in 147 attempts. Tyler Holubek had a team-high 19 kills.
