DE PERE – St. Norbert College flew to a 3-1 senior day win over Edgewood College in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center.
The Green Knights (9-13) defeated the Eagles 20-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-13 in the penultimate home game of the regular season.
St. Norbert trailed for most of the first set, losing traction after a 7-2 run from Edgewood made it 11-6 in favor of the Eagles. The Green Knights got within three points of the lead at 21-18, with Bennett Kornaus (pictured) leading the way with three kills in the run. However, Edgewood ended the set on a 4-2 run to take a 25-20 set win.
After taking an 11-10 run in the second set, the Green Knights lost the slim lead as Edgewood got out to a 16-12 lead. That tide turned when Kade Nelson hit two back-to-back service aces amid a 6-0 St. Norbert run and took a 19-17 lead. Edgewood took back the lead at 20-19, but kills from Barry Applewhite and Kaden Kornaus helped the Green Knights win set two, 25-22.
Bennett Kornaus broke a 6-6 tie in the third set with three straight kills and helped the Green Knights maintain a healthy lead through most of the set. The Eagles managed to tie the set at 20-20 before the Green Knights finished on a 5-1 run with four of the points coming on Edgewood errors to win 25-21.
St. Norbert took the biggest lead of the game to open the fourth set, starting out on a 12-4 run. The Eagles never recovered from the deficit and ended on a service ace from Michael Whitney to take the 3-1 win.
St. Norbert hit .252 for the match with 52 kills and 18 errors on 135 attempts. Bennett Kornaus had 18 kills, while Kaden Kornaus had 10. Applewhite finished with seven kills.
Whitney had a team-high 39 assists, while Ryan Conway recorded a career-high 23 digs. Nelson and Applewhite each had three blocks.
Edgewood hit .164 for the match with 44 kills and 22 errors on 134 attempts. Carsyn Stringfellow led the Eagles with 15 kills.
