VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - St. Norbert College opened the Virginia Wesleyan University Tournament with a 3-0 win over Hood College at TowneBank Arena.
The Green Knights (2-2) swept the Blazers 25-16, 25-14, 25-17. St. Norbert hit a lusty .377, its second-highest match percentage in program history. The Green Knights registered 33 kills against 10 errors in 61 attempts.
St. Norbert used a 7-1 run in Set 1 to turn a 5-4 lead into a 12-5 edge. The Green Knights led 16-12 before going on a 6-1 run for a 22-13 lead, paced by three
Owen Knezevich kills. A block by
Michael Whitney and
Barry Applewhite locked up a 1-0 lead. The Green Knights surged out to an 8-1 lead in Set 2, getting three kills from
Bennett Kornaus. Hood would get to within six points later in the set, but a
Kade Nelson kill on the Green Knights' third set point was true for a 2-0 lead.
A quick start was again in the cards in Set 3, with St. Norbert going on a 7-0 run to take a 9-2 lead behind two
Wade La Blanc blocks. The Green Knights led 17-12 before a 4-0 run paced by two
Jack Perhach service aces took the mystery out of the final result.
Knezevich had nine kills, while Kornaus had seven and Nelson added five. Whitney had 23 assists. Kornaus had three service aces, while Perhach added two.
Wthiney had five digs, while
Kaden Kornaus and
Zach Hanse had three apiece. Applewhite finished with four blocks, while La Blanc, Whitney and
Bennett Kornaus had two apiece.
