GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - St. Norbert College opened its four matches in the Calvin University Invitational by splitting its first two outings on the first day of competition at Hoogenboom Gymnasium.
The Green Knights (3-5) opened with a 3-1 win over The University of Olivet by scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-15, 25-22 before falling 3-0 to host Calvin 25-17, 25-21, 25-15.
Against Olivet, St. Norbert rallied from a 17-16 deficit to claim a 1-0 lead before the Comets took Set 2 after trailing 21-19. The Green Knights went on a 7-1 run in Set 3 to pull away from a 12-10 lead to take a 2-1 lead. St. Norbert then nursed a close lead all the way to the finish line by getting the last two points in Set 4 to seal the match win.
St. Norbert hit .243, with 46 kills against 21 errors in 103 attempts.
Barry Applewhite had 11 kills, while
Kaden Kornaus (pictured) and
Ryan Da Silva had 10 kills apiece.
Michael Whitney finished with 18 assists, while
Ethan Grassl added nine. Da Silva added three service aces and seven digs.
Jacob Van Ooyen hda seven digs, while
Grant Bettag had three blocks.
Against Calvin, the Green Knights had a chance to tie the match at 1-1 before the host broke a 21-21 tie with a 4-0 run to take a 2-0 lead and go on from there to take the match.
The Green Knights hit .109, with 31 kills against 21 errors in 92 attempts. Kornaus, Van Ooyen, Da Silva and
Kade Nelson all had seven kills apiece. Whitney finished with 26 assists and 10 digs.
