GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - St. Norbert College swept its pair of matches on the second day of the Calvin University Invitational to finish 3-1 overall in the event at Hoogenboom Gymnasium.
The Green Knights (5-5) opened with a 3-0 win over Franklin College by scores of 25-17, 25-17, 25-19 and followed up with a 3-0 triumph over Adrian College by scores of 28-26, 25-13, 25-22.
Against Adrian, freshman
Noah Cullen (pictured) set a St. Norbert record for hitting percentage in a match (minimum of 12 kills) at .700, pounding 15 kills against one error in 20 swings. That effort led an offense that hit .312 overall, with 44 terminations against 14 errors in 96 attempts.
St. Norbert trailed the Bulldogs for most of Set 1 and faced its first adverse set point when trailing 24-21. But an Adrian service error and attacking error plus a
Kaden Kornaus kill leveled the set at 24-24 and force a deuce set. The set proceeded to 26-26 before an Adrian service error and a
Jacob Van Ooyen kill gave the Green Knights a 1-0 lead. The Green Knights had little trouble in Set 2, leading 11-3 and 19-9 en route to a 2-0 lead. A tight third set saw St. Norbert pull away from an 18-16 lead to get breathing room at 22-17 following a
Kade Nelson kill. The Bulldogs closed to within 23-21 and 24-22 before another Kornaus kill sealed the win.
In addition to Cullen's 15 kills, Kornaus finished with 10 kills.
Michael Whitney had 36 assists. Kornaus added eight digs in the back row while
Ryan Conway totaled seven.
Ryan Da Silva finished with five blocks and Nelson added three.
Against Franklin, the Green Knights pulled away from a 15-15 tie in Set 1 to take a 21-15 lead on a 6-0 run in taking the first set. St. Norbert trailed 5-1 and 6-5 in Set 2 before 9-3 run led to a 14-9 lead and an eventual 2-0 match advantage. The Green Knights had to again battle back in Set 3, trailing 13-9 before a 10-1 run gave St. Norbert a 19-14 lead.
Barry Applewhite had three blocks during the run. St. Norbert had a 23-15 lead before a 4-0 Franklin run was stopped by a Grizzlies' attack error and a match-clinching kill by
Nikola Zlatkovic.
The Green Knights hit .310 with 39 kills and 13 errors in 84 attempts. Van Ooyen and Kornaus each had seven kills, while Da Silva and
Wade La Blanc both had six apiece. Whitney finished with 29 assists, while Kornaus had a pair of service aces. La Blanc had a team-high seven digs with
Zach Hanse adding six. Applewhite finished with four blocks, while Kornaus, La Blanc and Zlatkovic all had three apiece.
