DE PERE – St. Norbert College kept it interesting in a 3-0 loss to Benedictine University, playing in three tightly contested sets in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center.
The Green Knights (6-11, 1-4) nearly took the first set from the Eagles, who previaled 30-28 in the opening set. The Green Knights had several lenghty runs in the first set, including a 12-4 run to take a 21-15 lead. In that run, Kaden Kornaus (pictured) recorded three kills. The Eagles then rallied to tie the set at 24 following a 9-3 run and eventually took the lead at 26-25. St. Norbert responded with two kills from Barry Applewhite and Bennett Kornaus to take a 27-26 lead as the two sides could not take a clear advantage. Eventually, a 4-1 run to end the set resulted in a Benedictine victory.
The Green Knights trailed for most of the second set but came within one point off another Kornaus kill to trail just 23-22 before the Eagles took the second set off two attack errors, 25-23.
The Green Knights had their fair share of small runs in the third set, but the closest they came was within three points as the Eagles completed the sweep with a 25-19 set win.
Bennett Kornaus led the Green Knights with 13 kills, while Kaden Kornaus had 12. Applehwhite and Kaden Kornaus each had three blocks. Michael Whitney had 32 assists and led in digs with eight.
