DE PERE - St. Norbert College picked up its biggest-ever win in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play with a 3-1 win over Concordia University Wisconsin at Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center.
The Green Knights (6-7, 1-2) won for the fourth time in their last six matches by beating the Falcons, who were picked for fifth in the NACC Pre-Season Poll, 25-16, 25-18, 22-25, 25-23.
St. Norbert got off to a hot start, hitting .414 (14-2-29) in Set 1. The Green Knights saw a 6-5 lead embellish into a 15-7 advantage after a 9-2 run behind the service of
Cam Doty and
Bennett Kornaus (pictured). The Falcons would get as close as 22-15 but never seriously threaten. Set 2 saw St. Norbert erase a 4-2 deficit and take a 10-6 lead following an 8-2 run. The set would be tied at 14-14 before 7-2 run got the Green Knights some breathing room, with Kornaus and
Kade Nelson each getting a pair of kills during the spurt. A
Michael Whitney service ace on set point gave St. Norbert a 2-0 lead.
The Falcons pushed back in the third set, leading 19-16 before St. Norbert went on a 4-0 run to take a 20-19 lead. The set was tied 22-22 before the Falcons got three-straight points to get back into the match trailing 2-1. A tense fourth set saw 15 ties and four lead changes, with Concordia leading 19-17. A 3-0 run by St. Norbert, paced by a Nelson and Whitney block and a Nelson solo block, helped the Green Knights lead 20-19. Following a Concordia point, the Green Knights again had a 3-0 run on kills by Nelson and
Kaden Kornaus bracketing a bad Falcons' set. Concordia had one last-ditch rally to trail 24-23, but a block by
Bennett Kornaus and
Barry Applewhite closed out the win for the Green Knights.
St. Norbert had 54 kills against 22 errors in 142 attempts for a .225 hitting percentage.
Kaden Kornaus had 15 kills, while
Bennett Kornaus added 12 and Nelson eight. Applewhite and Whitney had six each. Whitney had 41 assists.
The Green Knights totaled 62 digs, their third-highest total in a four-set match. The Kornaus brothers had 12 digs each, while

Bennett Kornaus adding three each. Applewhite had two blocks.
