St. Norbert Survives Five Sets With Lakeland

DE PERE - St. Norbert College was extended to the limit but held on to survive a 3-2 win over Lakeland University in a tense Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match between the longtime rivals at Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center.

The Green Knights (13-4, 4-0 NACC) extended their winning streak to six matches with a 25-14, 21-25, 25-19, 20-25, 15-9 victory.

St. Norbert saw a 5-4 deficit in Set 1 turn into a 13-7 lead following a 9-2 run. The Muskies would get to within 14-11 but a 7-0 St. Norbert skein would be enough to vault to a 1-0 lead. Lakeland saw a 13-12 lead in Set 2 rupture into a 19-13 advantage, with the Green Knights not getting closer than 22-19 and 23-20 as the Muskies tied things up at 1-1.

The third set remained in doubt most of the way but St. Norbert went on a 7-1 run to escape from a 17-17 tie to forge a 2-1 lead. Lakeland would battle back, pulling away from a 19-19 tie with a decisive 5-0 run to get back to even at 2-2. St. Norbert trailed 6-4 in the tiebreaking fifth set, going on a 7-0 run to take control at 11-6. Six attacking errors and a bad set by the Muskies accounted for the run, which included a big double block from Kirsten Klatt and Heidi Colburn to put St. Norbert ahead for good at 7-6. St. Norbert would never lead by less than four points the rest of the way.

St. Norbert hit .167 in the match, getting 57 kills against 27 errors in 180 attempts. Casey Vaughan and Mickenzi Benter each had 13 kills, while Mari Szews added 10 and Annabel Stevenson had nine. Colburn finished with 31 assists. Andrianna Volz and Claire Leynse had three service aces each.

Kara Sowinski (pictured) had a career-high 28 digs, while Colburn had 13, Vaughan 11 and Leynse 10. Klatt and Colburn had two blocks apiece.

Lakeland hit .109, with 50 kills against 31 errors in 175 attempts. Samya Hughes led the Muskies with 15 kills.
