DE PERE – St. Norbert College returned to winning ways with a dominant sweep over Alverno College in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center, with senior Heidi Colburn reaching 2,500 career assists in the victory.
The Green Knights (17-7, 6-1 NACC) swept the Inferno with a 25-7, 25-15, 25-14 victory.
Following a 2-2 start in the first set, the Green Knights went on a 23-5 scoring run to cruise to a 25-7 set one win. Casey Vaughan (pictured) had four of the last five kills to end the set. The Green Knights went up 8-5 in the second set before an Alverno run gave the Inferno their first advantage in the game at 11-10. St. Norbert went on a small run before Alverno again knotted the score at 15-15, before the Green Knights exploded on a 10-0 run to take a 2-0 lead in the game.
The Inferno again held a small advantage in the third set for some time, but the Green Knight offense once again proved to be too much as one final lengthy scoring run resulted in a sweep.
St. Norbert hit .280, with 40 kills against 12 errors in 100 attempts. Vaughan had nine kills, while Mickenzi Benter added five. Colburn had 15 assists in her milestone night, while Keira Ashenfelter added nine helpers. Additionally, Benter recorded her 1,000th career assist, notching seven.
Kara Sowinski had nine digs, while Colburn had seven. Benter, Anna Kudick and Alli Clark each had two blocks.
Alverno hit -.071, with 13 kills against 20 errors on 99 attempts. Sofia Mitchell and Mary Needham each had four kills for the Inferno.
