St. Norbert Opens at NCAA Championship

PITTSFORD, N.Y. - St. Norbert College had two athletes competing on Day 1 of the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship at St. John Fisher University's Polisseni Track and Field Complex.

Lauren Rottier opened the first of two days of competition in the heptathlon, while Sydney Spaeth took part in the long jump.

Rottier had a solid first day, which sees four of the multi's seven events decided. Rottier sits in sixth place with 2,943 points, 169 points behind the current leader. Rottier started with 788 points in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.41 seconds. She followed with a clearance of 5 feet 2 1/4 inches in the high jump for 712 points. Rottier then popped a shot put of 39-3 1/4 - the best mark of all heptathlon contestants - for 659 points. She closed out her day with a time of 26.15 seconds in the 200-meter dash for 784 points. The heptathlon continues at 9:30 a.m. CDT Friday.

Spaeth had a tough ending to her competition in the long jump, getting bumped from the finals on the very last jump of the final heat of preliminaries. Spaeth posted a 10th-place finish after finishing with a distance of 18-7 3/4. In her three jump sequence, Spaeth fouled and then hit the 18-7 3/4 mark followed by a jump of 18-2 1/4 in her third attempt. Spaeth will compete in the triple jump at 9 a.m. CDT Saturday.

Grace Kowalkowski will also complete on Friday, taking part in the pole vault at 5 p.m. CDT.
