BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - St. Norbert College won the opening set but eventually fell to No. 20-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University 3-1 in a non-conference match at Shirk Center.
The Titans rallied to top the Green Knights 23-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-20.
St. Norbert got the early jump by pulling away from a 12-12 tie to take a 20-14 lead following an 8-2 run. The Green Knights led 24-21 before Illinois Wesleyan scored two points to get to within one, but a
Barry Applewhite kill closed out the 1-0 lead. The second set was tied 5-5 before the Titans went on an 8-2 run to take control and eventually square the match at 1-1. The third set featured nine ties, the last at 22-22. The Green Knights trailed 24-23 before Illinois Wesleyan scored to make it 2-1. St. Norbert trailed 16-15 before the Titans went on a 4-0 run to get the breathing room it needed to salt the match away.
St. Norbert hit .125, with 40 kills against 26 errors in 112 attempts.
Jacob Van Ooyen had a team-high 11 kills, while
Kade Nelson added 10.
Michael Whitney finished with 34 assists. Van Ooyen had two service aces.
Ryan Conway (pictured) had 13 digs, while Whitney added six. Nelson, Van Ooyen, Whitney and
Kaden Kornaus all head two blocks apiece.
Illinois Wesleyan hit .315, with 60 kills against 21 errors in 124 attempts. Ethan Kuziela had a match-high 18 kills.
