DE PERE - Playing its third five-set match in five days, St. Norbert College came out on the winning end after tipping Concordia University Chicago 3-2 in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match at Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center.
The Green Knights (10-11, 3-5 NACC) won the last two sets to claim a 22-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 15-7 victory.
A day after posting a school-record 74 kills in a five-set loss to Westminster (Mo.) College, St. Norbert put away 71 terminations to disappoint the Cougars. The Green Knights' 71 kills came against 20 errors in 163 attempts for a .313 hitting percentage.
The first set was tied 11-11 before Concordia slowly pulled away to take a 1-0 lead. The Green Knights led Set 2 by a 16-15 count before going on a 5-1 run to get some breathing room and level the match at 1-1. The Cougars led for most of Set 3, closing out a 2-1 lead after a 22-20 lead. St. Norbert got some breathing room in Set 4, going on a 6-1 run following an 11-1 tie. Noah Cullen helped tie things back up at 2-2. St. Norbert trailed 3-0 in the decisive fifth set before answering on a 4-0 run to take a 4-3 lead. After Concordia tied it at 4-4, St. Norbert rattled off another quick 3-0 run off kills by Cullen and
Jacob Van Ooyen and a block from Cullen and
Barry Applewhite for a 7-4 lead. St. Norbert pulled away from a 7-5 lead with another 4-0 run to all but seal the outcome with an 11-5 advantage.
Van Ooyen had his second-straight match with at least 20 kills, finishing with 21. Cullen posted a career-high 19, while Kornaus finished with 18.
Michael Whitney (pictured) finished with 55 assists.
Ryan Conway had his third match with at least 20 digs, finishing with 20, while
Zach Hanse added 14. Applewhite had five blocks, while Van Ooyen had three.
Concordia hit .267 with 62 kills against 19 errors in 161 attempts. Leon Gudzovski led the Cougars with 20 points.
