Green Knights Sweep Muskies In NACC Win

DE PERE - St. Norbert College gained its first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win of the young season with a 3-0 victory over Lakeland University at Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center.

The Green Knights (2-4, 1-1 NACC) swept the Muskies (5-7, 0-2) by scores of 25-20, 25-20, 25-16.

The first set was closely fought through the first two-thirds of it, featuring eight ties and four lead changes. St. Norbert trailed 10-9 before a 5-0 run behind a pair of Kaden Kornaus kills led to a 14-10 lead. The Green Knights took a 21-15 lead on a block from Barry Applewhite and Michael Whitney (pictured). The Muskies closed to within 22-19 before St. Norbert closed out a 1-0 lead.

The Green Knights never trailed in Set 2, jumping out to leads of 5-1 and 12-4. The Muskies would get to within four points of the host five times in the set but could get no closer, with Jacob Van Ooyen's kill sealing a 2-0 advantage.

A 7-0 St. Norbert run saw a 6-5 lead rupture into a 13-5 edge, with Van Ooyen getting two kills and a service ace during the skein. The Green Knights were never seriously threatened in the final set, leading to their first-ever 3-0 win over the Muskies in cutting their deficit in the all-time series between the two rivals to 4-3.

St. Norbert hit a lusty .385, with 44 kills against nine errors in 91 attempts. Van Ooyen had 12 kills, while Ryan Da Silva had nine and Kade Nelson seven. Whitney finished with 35 assists, while Ethan Grassl had two service aces.
