DE PERE – St. Norbert College debuted with a weekend split with Michigan Tech University, falling in the program's opener 5-3 on Friday and rebounding with a 4-3 win on Saturday in two non-conference games at Cornerstone Community Center.
The Green Knights opened their American Collegiate Hockey Association life with a goal from Mick Gilbert at 6:10 off an assist from Luke Wessel to make it 1-0 and catching the Wolfpack off guard. Michigan Tech opened their account at 10:01 to tie the game at 1-1 on a Wolfpack power play.
St. Norbert took the lead back at 3:21 in the second period off a unassisted Chaz DelMarcelle goal, but Michigan Tech once again tied the game on a power play at 9:37. A third goal on the power play for the Wolfpack under 20 seconds later gave the visitors their first lead of the game at 3-2 before adding a fourth less than 10 seconds later. St. Norbert fought back with a Will Mullooly (pictured) goal at 13:23 on a power play off assists from Chase Kassulat and Sean Yurkov but did not find a game-tying goal in the third period. Michigan Tech scored the only goal of the third period at 3:15.
St. Norbert was outshot 39-29. Anders Smith made 34 saves for St. Norbert. Michigan Tech's Justin Hubble scored four goals, all of which came on power plays.
St. Norbert opened the scoring once again in the second game with Yurkov scoring at 2:06 from a Tommy Somen assist. Dylan Pomillio added a second at 5:16 on an unassisted goal to make it 2-0 before Michigan Tech added a response at 10:43.
The Wolfpack tied the game at 9:51 in the second period, but a Mullooly goal with an assist from Luke Wessel on a power play made it 3-2 to St. Norbert at 12:59. Yurkov's second goal of the game at 7:00 in the third period proved to be the winner for the team's first win in program history. A fifth goal of the weekend from Hubble made it 4-3 at 12:57 but proved only to be a late consolation for the Wolfpack.
St. Norbert was outshot 50-32. Smith made an outstanding 47 saves for the Green Knights in the victory.
