VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - St. Norbert College sophomore
Ezra Schermacher sits in 11th place after the first day of competition in the heptathlon at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championship at Virginia Beach Sports Center.
Schermacher has 2,760 points through the first four events. Williams College's Jackson Anderson is the event leader among 20 contestants with 3,044 points. Schermacher is 81 point out of eighth place, which is the cut for All-Amreica status.
Schermacher opened with a time of 7.35 seconds in the 60-meter dash to register 765 points. He followed with a long jump of 21 feet 11 1/2 inches for 741 points and a shot put distance of 34-10 1/4 for 523 points. Schermacher then posted a high jump of 6-3 1/2 to gain 731 points.
The final three events of the heptathlon - the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run - get underway at 9 a.m. CST Saturday.
