St. Norbert Sweeps Olivet In Home Opener

DE PERE - St. Norbert College had a happy home opener when it swept Olivet College in a 3-0 win in a non-conference match at Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center.

The Green Knights (2-3) topped the Comets (1-1) by scores of 25-15, 25-23, 25-21.

St. Norbert trailed 8-4 in the opening set until going on an 8-0 run with Jake Krueger serving to swing momentum. Jake Bettag had a kill and two blocks during the run, while Krueger had an ace. The Green Knights eventually built a lead of 20-11 to finish off an overall run of 16-3, with Owen Knezevich getting a kill and solo block during a final 5-0 flurry. Bettag's kill finished off the set win.

The Green Knights trailed 13-11 in Set 2 before a 4-0 run, getting a block from Josh Hauke and kills from Bettag and Hauke. The Comets come back to tie the set 23-23, but an Olivet service error and a Bettag kill gave St. Norbert the final two points in the deuce set.

Set 3 featured ties of 10-10 and 17-17, but the Green Knights had three-straight points to take a 20-17 lead. With St. Norbert leading 23-21, a Hauke kill and an Olivet attacking error finished the match.

St. Norbert narrowly missed a fourth-consecutive match with 40 kills, finishing with 38 against 13 errors in 100 attacks for a .250 hitting percentage. Hauke finished with 12 kills in 23 attempts, while Bettag had 10 kills in 17 attempts. Knezevich added eight kills. Michael Whitney had 18 assists and Eddie Pacula 15 assists. Krueger and Kade Nelson had two service aces apiece.

Bettag had six blocks, while Whitney added four and Nelson three. Knezevich and Ryan Conway had nine digs apiece.

Olivet hit .101, with 31 kills and 21 errors in 99 attempts. Kai Hartman had a team-high nine kills.
