ST. LOUIS - St. Norbert College faced a pair of quality foes at the Fontbonne College Triangular, falling 3-0 to Fontbonne before suffering a tough 3-2 setback to Augustana College in a pair of non-conference matches at Dunham Student Activity Center.
The Green Knights opened with a 25-13, 25-23, 25-19 loss to Fontbonne, and then dropped a heartbreaker to Augustana by scores of 21-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-21, 15-12.
Against Augustana, St. Norbert pulled away from a 21-21 tie in Set 1 by scoring the final four points. Set 2 was equally close, with the Green Knights going on a 5-0 run after a 19-19 tie.
Owen Knezevich had a kill and ace while
Jake Krueger added a kill during the run.
Josh Hauke's kill clinched the set and a 2-0 lead. Set 3 was tied 17-17 before a 4-0 run by Augustana turned the momentum. Set 4 was tied 15-15 before the Vikings went on a 5-1 run and eventually tie the match 2-2. St. Norbert jumped out to a 7-3 lead in Set 5, helped by two kills each from Hauke and Bettag and one from Krueger. The Vikings would rally to take a 13-10 lead off a 10-3 run. St. Norbert would close to within 13-12 but would get no closer.
The Green Knights hit .148 in the match, with 46 kills against 27 errors in 128 attempts. Hauke had 13 kills, while Bettag added 11.
Michael Whitney totaled 22 assists with
Eddie Pacula adding 15. Bettag also had three service aces.
Ryan Conway had 22 digs, while
Kade Nelson had four blocks.
Against Fontbonne, the Green Knights had late leads in Set 2 of 20-18, 22-21 and 23-22, but couldn't get over the hump with the Griffins scoring the final two points after a 23-23 tie. The third set was tied 18-18 before Fontbonne went on a quick 4-0 run to take control.
St. Norbert hit .109, with 33 kills and 21 errors in 110 swings. Hauke and Knezevich had nine kills each, with Krueger adding six. Pacula had 13 assists, while Whitney added 11.
Boston Peck had a team-high nine digs, while Bettag and Whitney had three blocks apiece.
