BEREA, Ohio - St. Norbert College wrapped up its opening weekend with a pair of 3-1 losses to Baldwin Wallace College and Thiel College on the second day of the Baldwin Wallace Tournament.
The Green Knights opened with a 20-25, 25-20, 25-11, 25-21 setback to Baldwin Wallace and then followed with a 22-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-22 loss to Thiel.
St. Norbert led the opening set against Baldwin Wallace 12-11 before going on a 7-2 run to take a 19-13 lead.
Michael Whitney had a pair of kills and
Jake Bettag a service ace during the run. A Whitney kill off an attack-on-two closed out the Set 1 win. The Green Knights and Yellowjackets were tied 15-15 in Set 2 before the host went on a 4-0 run to get some breathing room and pull away. Set 4 was tied at 18-18 before Baldwin Wallace went on a 4-0 run to get momentum, although the Green Knights did get to within 23-21.
The Green Knights hit .139 in the match, with 41 kills against 24 errors in 122 attempts.
Owen Knezevich had a career-high 15 kills.
Kade Nelson had seven kills, while Bettag added six.
Eddie Pacula finished with 20 assists and Whitney added 15. Knezevich had 13 digs for a double-double, while
Ryan Conway added 11 digs. Whitney had three blocks and Conway two.
Against Thiel, St. Norbert was locked into a tight first set before scoring the final three points to snap a 22-22 tie. A block from Knezevich and Nelson put the Green Knights ahead 24-22. St. Norbert trailed 24-23 in Set 2 before the Tomcats terminated to win the set. The Green Knights were also in Set 4 the entire way, trailing 23-21 before Thiel closed out the win.
St. Norbert hit .149, getting 41 kills against 23 errors in 121 attempts. Knezevich had 13 kills, which also topped his previous career high entering the day. Bettag had eight kills. Whitney totaled 18 assists with Pacula adding 14.
Jake Krueger had three service aces and Knezevich had two along with a team-high nine digs. Bettag had five blocks, Nelson four, and
Kaden Kornaus and Knezevich three apiece.
