BEREA, Ohio - St. Norbert College opened its third men's volleyball season with a split of two matches at the Baldwin Wallace College Tournament.
The Green Knights opened with a 3-0 loss to Loras College by scores of 25-21, 25-18, 25-13. St. Norbert bounced back with a 3-1 win over Hilbert College, posting scores of 25-22, 22-25, 25-15, 27-25.
St. Norbert's match with Hilbert was nip-and-tuck the whole way. The Green Knights opened a 13-8 lead in Set 1 before the Hawks slowly climbed back into it, tying the set at 21-21 and then 22-22. A kill from
Jake Bettag, and block from
Owen Knezevich and a Hilbert attack error closed out the 1-0 lead for St. Norbert. Set 2 was similar, also tied at 22-22, before Hilbert scored three consecutive points to knot the score 1-1.
The Green Knights jumped out to a big lead in Set 3, opening up a 14-6 lead after trailing 4-3.
Jake Bettag and
Michael Whitney each had three blocks during the run. Hilbert got to within 17-12, but St. Norbert closed out the set on an 8-3 run for a 2-1 lead. St. Norbert would have two match points in Set 4 at 24-22 and 24-23, but Hilbert would force a deuce set and be tied at 25-25. A pair of
Josh Hauke kills wrapped up the win.
St. Norbert posted a school-record 48 kills, hitting .173 with 26 errors in 173 swings. Hauke had 10 kills, while Knezevich added nine. Bettag had seven, and
Kade Nelson and
Kaden Kornaus added six apiece.
Eddie Pacula had 20 assists, while Whitney added 19.
Hauke and Whitney had five blocks each, while Bettag and
Morgan Wilson had four apiece. Hauke and
Ryan Conway had nine digs apiece.
St. Norbert battled Loras, which entered the week receiving votes in the AVCA Division III Top 15 Poll. The Green Knights trailed 21-18 in the first set before a 3-0 run by the Duhawks gained some breathing room. In Set 2, St. Norbert trailed 17-15 and 18-16, but another 3-0 Loras run allowed it to pull away.
The Green Knights had 18 kills against Loras, with Hauke posting six and Bettag five. Whitney had nine assists, while Pacula added six.
Boston Peck had a team-high five digs.
