DE PERE – St. Norbert College picked up its first conference sweep of the season with a 3-0 win over Wisconsin Lutheran College in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match at Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center.
The Green Knights (6-9, 3-1 NACC) topped the Warriors 25-18, 25-22, 25-23. The three wins in conference play matches the most ever in a season for St. Norbert just four matches into the league schedule.
St. Norbert jumped out to a 6-1 lead in Set 1, fueled by a pair of
Kade Nelson service aces. The Green Knights never trailed in the opening set, but the Warriors got back to within 16-13. St. Norbert would go on a 5-1 to pull away, with
Jake Bettag and
Kaden Kornaus getting kills.
Jonah Koleske's kill closed out the set.
Set 2 featured 14 ties and nine lead changes. The Green Knights and Warriors were tied at 19 before St. Norbert rattled off three-straight points for a 22-19 lead. Wisconsin Lutheran responded with three consecutive points of its own for a 22-22 tie, but St. Norbert got a kill from
Kaden Kornaus and a service ace from
Eddie Pacula to help close out the set for a 2-0 lead.
Wisconsin Lutheran led 10-7 in Set 3, but St. Norbert went on a 5-0 run for a 12-10 lead. The Warriors led 18-16 before St. Norbert went on a 4-0 run thanks to two kills by Bettag and one from
Jake Krueger. Wisconsin Lutheran closed to within 24-23 before a
Barry Applewhite kills wrapped up the match.
St. Norbert hit .195, with 41 kills against 18 errors in 118 attempts. Krueger had 11 kills, while Kornaus had eight, Bettag six and Applewhite five. Pacula finished with 16 assists and
Michael Whitney added 14. Krueger had four service aces and Pacula totaled three.
Ryan Conway had 11 digs, while Pacula and Krueger had nine apiece. Bettag had four blocks, while Whitney and
Morgan Wilson had three each.
Wisconsin Lutheran hit .078, with 29 kills against 20 errors in 115 swings. James Biedenbender led the Warriors with 10 kills.
