DE PERE – St. Norbert College ended the weekend series against Maranatha Baptist University with impressive 30-0 and 12-0 victories in a non-conference doubleheader at Van Alstine Field.
The Green Knights (4-2) swung for the fences early and often in the sweep, hosting the program's earliest home opener in the team's history.
Zach Bostrand (pictured) opened the scoring in the second inning on a wild pitch, while a two-run single from Ethan Volz made it 3-0. A Declan Kane 3 RBI home run grew the lead to 7-0 in the same inning. In total, the Green Knights scored 10 runs in the second inning. After three runs in the third, St. Norbert added 11 more in the fourth. The Green Knights scored off loaded bases several times including a 3-run single from Tyler Murphy to make it 21-0.
The Green Knights went on to score four more runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.
The Green Knights scored their 30 runs off 14 hits in the victory. Quinn Butera led St. Norbert with three hits and two RBIs, while Murphy had two hits and three RBIs. Levi Crosswell scored four runs while Evan Calderon scored three.
Jason Schroeder earned his first win of the season with seven strikeouts in four innings. Dylan Heier pitched three innings of relief with six strikeouts and no hits.
The Green Knights were held scoreless in the opening two innings of the second game of the day, with Matt Schuch scoring on a wild pitch in the third for a 1-0 St. Norbert lead. Schuch and Kane each had two-run singles in the fourth as the Green Knights extended their lead to 8-0. Tyler Dean's triple in the fifth scored two more while a Jake Lucas single RBI in the sixth made it 12-0.
Will DeBruin, Schuch, Lucas and Dean all had two hits in the win.
Charlie Gretz snatched his first victory of the year with 13 strikeouts in 6.2 innings while allowing just one hit.
