DE PERE - In one of the most bizarre circumstances in St. Norbert College athletics history, the Green Knights men's hockey team needed just over 16 hours to top Milwaukee School of Engineering 5-2 in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game that needed two arenas to complete.
The series opener began at the Kern Center in Milwaukee, with the Green Knights taking a 2-0 lead after one period. Throughout the first period and at intermission, a water leak in the building began to worsen, necessitating the game being suspended. The game resumed at 9:30 a.m. the next morning at the Cornerstone Community Center.
St. Norbert took its 2-0 lead behind first-period markers from
Ryan Gingher and
Blake Ulve, coming at 7:47 and 10:17. At first intermission it became apparent that the game would not be able to continue.
Resuming Sunday morning in De Pere, the Raiders cut the deficit to 2-1 when Charles Fink scored at 4:05.
Calvin Hanson's power-play goal at 19:08 of the second period gave the Green Knights their two-goal lead back.
MSOE cut its deficit to one when Casey Roepke scored at 4:10 of the third period. The Green Knights got a big insurance goal to push the lead back to 4-2 when
T.J. Koufis (pictured) scored at 7:58.
Ben Edwards closed things out with an empty-net marker at 19:48.
Koufis finished with one goal and one assist for two points for the Green Knights' lone multi-point game.
St. Norbert outshot MSOE 39-22.
Hunter Garvey made 20 saves for the Green Knights, while Austin Schwab made 34 stops for the Raiders.
St. Norbert was 1-for-6 on the power play, while MSOE was 0-for-4.
