Green Knights Blitz Bulldogs With Big Second Period

ADRIAN, Mich. - St. Norbert College pumped in five goals in a decisive second period as the Green Knights romped to a 5-0 win over Adrian College to sweep a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association series at Arrington Ice Arena.

The Green Knights (16-5, 11-3 NCHA), ranked No. 7 in the USCHO.com Division III Poll, swept the ninth-ranked Bulldogs (14-7, 8-6) at Adrian for the second time in program history - the first since January 2017. St. Norbert is now eight points ahead of fourth-place Adrian and just one point behind second-place Trine University with four games remaining.

The first period passed without any scoring despite Adrian getting a major power play with 4:58 remaining, but the Bulldogs ended up giving the Green Knights a 4-on-3 power play after committing a pair of minor infractions.

St. Norbert got things rolling quickly in the second period, when Dayton Deics buried a rebound just 44 seconds in for a 1-0 lead. The Green Knights doubled their lead when Ethan Byrne (pictured) finished off a 3-on-2 rush with a goal at 2:06. Things continued to escalate quickly when Mark Snarr's wrister from the blue line at 7:06 was true. Gustav Portillo scored a power-play goal on a transition play at 9:39, while Braden Lindstrom added a power-play goal of his own when he poked home a loose puck out front at 12:04.

Twelve of St. Norbert's 19 skaters found the scoresheet, with only two multi-point games: Byrne finished with one goal and one assist and Liam Fraser added two assists.

Adrian outshot St. Norbert 33-30. Hunter Garvey turned in a 33-save performance to register the shutout. Dershahn Stewart made 16 saves in 32:04 of work, while Nolan Suggs made nine stops in relief.

The Green Knights were 2-for-6 on the power play, while Adrian was 0-for-3.
