CHICAGO - St. Norbert College held off Illinois Institute of Technology throughout the second half and posted a 63-53 win in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at Keating Sports Center.
The Green Knights (6-2, 4-0 NACC) extended a modest winning streak to five games and it was their fourth-straight game holding an opponent under 60 points.
St. Norbert held a slight early lead before an 8-0 run over a two-minute stretch gave the Green Knights a 17-7 edge with 9:50 left in the first half. A
Will Stuckey conventional three-point play gave St. Norbert its biggest lead at 20-9 with 9:01 to go. The Scarlet Hawks would cut their deficit to 20-16 with 6:26 left, but St. Norbert would close the half on an 11-4 run to take a 31-20 lead at halftime.
The Green Knights would build a pair of 13-point leads early in the second half before the Scarlet Hawks would scramble back into the game with a 9-0 run to trail 35-31 with 15:32 to play.
Ryan Cox (pictured) would temporarily stanch the bleeding with a 3-pointer. A
Connor Pytleski trey would give St. Norbert a 43-35 edge with 12:08 left. Illinois Tech would get back-to-back 3s to get to within two points with 10:51 left, the first five times the host would get to within a deuce. St. Norbert would score the next goal each time. The Green Knights led 54-52 with 3:54 remaining before a 7-0 spurt proved decisive, with
Mason Freiburger getting a putback,
Cam Lathos hitting a 3-pointer and Cox getting a tip-in of his own for a 61-52 lead with 1:50 left.
St. Norbert shot 44.1 percent (26-for-59) from the floor. Cox posted a career-high 23 points, adding a team-high six rebounds. Lathos had 11 points off the bench, while Freiburger had 10 points.
Illinois Tech was 19-for-52 (36.5 percent) from the floor. Obrad Kuzmanovic had a team-high 14 points, while Garrison Carter added 12 points and 11 rebounds.
