KENOSHA – St. Norbert College fell just short of an impressive comeback against Carthage College, coming within one point of the lead at point in a 66-63 loss in a non-conference game at Tarble Arena.
The Green Knights (3-4) trailed by 18 at the half but outscored the Firebirds 25-13 in the third quarter to chip away at the lead. Despite the lengthy run, Carthage never surrendered the lead and narrowly escaped the Green Knights.
After the Green Knights held a 4-3 lead in the first quarter, Carthage went on a 10-0 run to take a sizable 13-4 lead early in the contest. Six points from Taylor Thiry and Avery Bierowski in the final two minutes of the opening 10 minutes gave the Firebirds a 20-15 lead.
Carthage led by double-digits for most of the second quarter, holding St. Norbert to just six points and two field goals.
St. Norbert improved on their second quarter performance in the third, shooting over 66% from the floor and at one point coming within three points thanks to a pair of free throws from Rose Hahn.
Carthage was able to regain a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter, but thanks to nine points from Marnie Kahl (pictured), made it a one possession game following a 3-pointer at 1:03 to make it 62-60. A three from Olivia Conway with 14 seconds left made it just a one-point game, but after two free throw makes and a missed three, the Green Knights fell just short.
St. Norbert shot 42. 6 percent from the floor (26-for-61). Kahl had a team-high 17 points and six rebounds while Thiry had 16 points and six boards with three steals. Hahn finished with 14 points.
Carthage shot 39.3 percent from the floor (22-for-56). Nora Ahram led the Firebirds with 16 points off the bench.
