ADRIAN, Mich. - St. Norbert College picked up a big win in the opening game of a crucial two-game Northern Collegiate Hockey Association series at Adrian College with a 6-2 triumph at Arrington Ice Arena.
The Green Knights (15-5, 10-3 NCHA), ranked No. 7 in the USCHO.com Division III Poll, picked up their largest margin of victory ever at Arrington Ice Arena by building a 5-0 lead against the ninth-ranked Bulldogs (14-6, 8-5).
Following a scoreless first period, St. Norbert struck quickly with a pair of goals 40 seconds apart near the middle of the second period for a sudden 2-0 lead.
Brock Baker (pictured) picked up a power-play goal at 8:39, followed by an unassisted goal by
T.J. Koufis at 9:19. Koufis added another marker, this one at 15:02 of the second, for his sixth goal of the year and a 3-0 lead that carried into second intermission.
Blake Ulve gave the Green Knights an insurance goal at 6:18 of the third, while Baker scored an unassisted shorthanded goal at 11:07 for a 5-0 edge. Adrian would get power-play goals at 12:27 by Patrick Saini and at 17:18 by Frank Tafelski to cut the deficit to three, but
Ethan Byrne buried a chance with 11 seconds left for the game's final goal.
Baker and Koufis each had two goals for two points, while
Calvin Hanson registered two assists for two points.
St. Norbert outshot Adrian 29-28.
Hunter Garvey made 26 saves for the Green Knights. Dershahn Stewart made 20 saves in the first 51:02 for Adrian, while Nolan Suggs made three stops in relief.
The Green Knights were 1-for-7 on the power play, while the Bulldogs were 2-for-5.
