STEVENS POINT - St. Norbert College made a late push but eventually came up just short in a hard-fought 3-2 loss to UW-River Falls at the UW-Stevens Point Tournament at Quandt Fieldhouse.
The Green Knights fell to the Falcons 20-25, 25-19, 25-19, 21-25, 15-13.
St. Norbert held a 6-4 lead in the decisive fifth set before the Falcons went on a 7-0 run to take an 11-6 lead. The Green Knights mounted a last-ditch rally and staved off three match points after trailing 14-10 to get to within 14-13, but a service error coming out of a River Falls timeout ended the match.
St. Norbert secured the first set when it went from a 16-12 deficit to an 18-16 lead. The Green Knights led 23-20 with
Maleigha Kovalaske getting consecutive kills for a 1-0 match lead. The Green Knights trailed 17-16 in Set 2 before the Falcons went on a 6-1 run to pull away. River Falls led from start to finish in Set 3 to take a 2-1 lead.
The Green Knights extended the match with a win in Set 4. St. Norbert trailed 20-17 before rallying behind a 4-0 run to take a 21-20 lead, fueled by a pair of kills from
Alyssa Mills and one termination by
Mari Szews. River Falls got the next point to tie it 21-21, but the Green Knights came again with four unanswered points, capped off by a
Heidi Colburn service ace.
St. Norbert hit .092 for the match, with 48 kills and 32 errors in 173 attempts. Kovalaske had a match-high 15 kills, while Mills added 12 kills and Szews nine. Colburn had 34 assists and three service aces. Mills also had three aces and
Maddie Kitowski added two.
Colburn posted a career-high 24 digs, while
Kara Sowinski added 17 digs and
Andrianna Volz 13 digs. Mills and
Alli Clark had two blocks apiece.
River Falls hit .106, going 53-34-180. Lauren Noth had a team-high 11 kills.
