St. Norbert Sweeps Pair of MIAC Foes

STEVENS POINT - St. Norbert College turned in its best day of the season with a pair of 3-0 wins over Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents Concordia-Moorhead College and Augsburg University at the UW-Stevens Point Tournament at Berg Gym.

The Green Knights (7-9) dispatched Concordia 25-20, 25-23, 25-18 before taking care of the Auggies 25-20, 25-22, 25-21.

Against Concordia, the Green Knights saw a 17-13 Set 1 lead melt into a 19-19 tie before regrouping to close the set on a 6-1 run to take a 1-0 lead. St. Norbert again battled back from a late set deficit in Set 2, with the Cobbers holding a 23-21 lead before a 4-0 run paced by three Casey Vaughan kills led to a 2-0 advantage. The third set featured a 16-13 deficit before a 12-2 St. Norbert run locked up the win.

St. Norbert hit .198, with 43 kills and 18 errors in 126 attempts. Vaughan posted a career-high 17 kills, while Alyssa Mills added 13 kills. Heidi Colburn had 37 assists and two service aces. Lauren Borchardt added three service aces.

Colburn totaled 13 digs, while Kara Sowinski added 12 digs and Bochardt 10. Clare Williams and Paige Olson had two blocks apiece.

Against Augsburg, St. Norbert never trailed in Set 1. The Auggies cut their deficit to within 21-20 late, but a pair of kills by Maleigha Kovalaske led a 4-0 run and a 1-0 lead. Augsburg held an 18-17 lead in Set 2 but St. Norbert rattled off three-straight points to take a lead it would never relinquish. An Auggies service error and a Mills kill turned a 23-22 lead into a 2-0 edge. The Green Knights steadily pulled away in the third set, seeing a 17-14 lead turn into a 21-16 edge en route to salting away the win.

St. Norbert hit a lusty .343, posting 46 terminations against just 12 errors in 99 swings. Kovalaske had 12 kills, while Alli Clark added nine, Mills eight and Mari Szews seven. Colburn had 37 assists.

Sowinski topped the back row with 12 digs, while Kovalaske had nine. Clark registered three blocks.

Colburn was named to the All-Tournament Team at the event's conclusion.
