DUBUQUE, Iowa - St. Norbert College rallied for a split on its second day of matches at the Duhawk Classic, falling to No. 14-ranked Washington (Mo.) University 3-1 before reverse sweeping UW-La Crosse 3-2 at Loras College's Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.
The Green Knights fell to the Bears 21-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-19 before coming back to ground the Eagles 19-25, 24-26, 25-20, 25-10, 15-13.
Against WashU, St. Norbert never trailed in Set 1. Following a 17-17 tie, the Green Knights went on a 4-0 run powered by a pair of
Alyssa Mills service aces.
Alli Clark's kill put St. Norbert up 1-0. In Set 2, the Green Knights trailed 20-19 before the Bears went on a 4-0 run to take control. After a 13-13 tie in Set 4, WashU went on an 8-3 run to pull ahead and salt away the match.
St. Norbert hit .174 for the match, posting 50 kills with 24 errors and 149 attempts. Mills had 13 kills, while Clark and
Maleigha Kovalaske had 10 kills apiece.
Heidi Colburn had 37 assists, while Mills had two aces.
Lauren Borchardt had a team-high 10 digs, while Colburn,
Andrianna Volz and
Kara Sowinski all had eight digs each. Clark had three blocks.
Against La Crosse, the Green Knights fell behind 2-0 before controlling all but the early stages of Set 3. St. Norbert led 22-20 and then closed out the set win with a 3-0 run. In Set 4, St. Norbert saw a 7-4 lead rupture into a 19-5 bulge and extend to a 23-6 lead, an impressive 16-2 run. In the decisive fifth set, St. Norbert led 8-6 before going on a 3-1 run to take an 11-7 lead. The Green Knights led 12-8 before the Eagles cut it to 12-10 and eventually 13-12. St. Norbert took a 14-12 lead on an
Anna Kudick kill, and after a La Crosse point and Kovalaske kill capped off the comeback.
St. Norbert hit .269 in the match, totaling a whopping 65 kills with 23 errors in 156 attempts. Mills had 19 kills, while Kovalaske had 16 kills. Colburn had 48 assists and three aces. Borchardt added two service aces.
Sowinski had 15 digs, Colburn 13 digs and Borchardt and Kovalaske 11 digs apiece. Kovalaske and Clark had two blocks apiece.
