DE PERE - St. Norbert College took on UW-Stevens Point in its 2024 home opener and fell to the visiting Pointers 24-3 in a non-conference game at Schneider Stadium.
The Green Knights and Pointers battled to a scoreless first quarter, with St. Norbert holding Stevens Point without a first down in the opening 15 minutes.
St. Norbert lost a fumble inside the Stevens Point 30 on the second play from scrimmage in the second quarter. The two teams traded punts until St. Norbert was intercepted at the Stevens Point 30 with 1:05 left in the period. The Pointers got the first half's only points when Aleks Sauer-Milli connected on a 40-yard field goal with 32 seconds left for a 3-0 lead.
The Green Knights had possession to open the second half and had a first-and-goal at the Stevens Point 2 and then, after a penalty, had another first-and-goal at the Pointers' 1, but had to settle for a
Mason Levake 22-yard field goal with 9:35 left and a 3-3 tie.
The Pointers broke the game open in the fourth quarter, with Brycen Cashin scoring on a 2-yard run with 13:36 remaining. St. Norbert lost a fumble at the Stevens Point 47 with 5:10 left. Stevens Point would score on a Jacob Leair to Miles Gallagher 39-yard pass with 3:14 to go. Reed Smith's 23-yard touchdown with 42 seconds left closed out the scoring.
Stevens Point outgained St. Norbert 257-213 in total offense, with the Pointers getting 115 yards in the fourth quarter. Michael Menneguzzo completed 15 of 30 passes for 144 yards in his first collegiate start.
Patrick Oden had 18 rushes for 48 yards.
Mitch Van Vooren had four receptions for 59 yards, while
Austin Miller caught four passes for 39 yards.
Leair completed 11 of 20 passes for 140 yards for the pointers. Gallagher caught five passes for 107 yards, while Cashin had a team-high 43 yards on 11 carries.
David Haselwander led the Green Knights with eight tackles, while
Sam Barnett and
Kyle Santos had seven stops each.
Marc Thomas added an interception.
