LISLE, Ill. - St. Norbert College gave No. 9-ranked Benedictine University all it could handle and more in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Village of Lisle/Benedictine Sports Complex.
The Green Knights (11-12, 4-4 NACC) won the opener 7-3 in eight innings before dropping a hard-fought 3-0 decision to the Eagles (17-3, 6-2) in the nightcap.
St. Norbert sent a statement early in Game 1 when
Devin Geary singled and
Levi Crosswell was hit by a pitch to open the game.
Trevor Reinhardt then followed with a booming three-run home run for a quick 3-0 lead. Benedictine would answer with two runs in the bottom of the first and neither team would score again until the Eagles scratched out a run in the fifth.
The scheduled seven-inning game then moved to extra innings and St. Norbert broke through in a big way in the top of the eighth. With two out and a runner on second, Geary was intentionally walked.
Zach Bostrand then pinch-hit and delivered with a single to score
Carson Krumrei. Reinhardt then posted his second three-run home run of the game for a 7-3 lead. Benedictine was retired in order in its half of the eighth inning.
Reinhardt was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and six runs batted in. Geary was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while
Matt Perry was 2-for-4.
Noah Chmielewski worked three innings of scoreless relief to get the win, allowing one hit with two strikeouts.
Jason Schroeder settled in for a five-inning start, scattering nine hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
Benedictine got all the runs it would need in Game 2 when it scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the third inning. St. Norbert had numerous chances to get on the board, leaving 14 runners on base. The Green Knights had baserunners in every inning and left the bases loaded in the fourth and fifth innings and two on in the seventh inning.
St. Norbert finished with six hits - all singles - and drew eight walks.
Luke Steebs took the hard-luck loss in a complete-game effort, allowing eight hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
