DE PERE - St. Norbert College battled Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference co-leader Illinois Institute of Technology but came up short in a pair of one-run losses, falling 7-6 and 6-5 at Van Alstine Field at Mel Nicks Sports Complex.
St. Norbert fell behind in the opener after the Scarlet Hawks scored single runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. The Green Knights answered with three runs in the bottom of the third inning on
Trevor Reinhardt's two-run single and
Will DeBruin's RBI groundout. Illinois Tech tied it at 3-3 with a run in the fifth but St. Norbert came again with two runs in its half of the frame on sacrifice flies by Reinhart and
Matt Perry for a 5-3 lead.
Illinois Tech scored four times in the top of the sixth inning for a 7-5 lead. St. Norbert got a run in the sixth inning on
Huck Sprong's solo home run, but the Green nights would go in order in the seventh to end the game.
Jaden Holgado was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while
Devin Geary scored two runs and Reinhardt hda three runs batted in.
Jace Midbon took the loss, allowing nine hits in 5 2/3 innings pitched.
St. Norbert took a 1-0 lead in the nightcap on
Tyler Pigeon's second-inning sacrifice fly. The Green Knights pulled ahead 3-0 in the fifth inning on a two-out, two-run single by DeBruin. Illinois Tech got a two-out three-run home run in the sixth by Connor Blake to tie it up at 3-3. St. Norbert scored in the seventh when Perry's grounder drove in Holgado, but the Scarlet Hawks responded with three runs in the eighth inning, with the go-ahead runs coming in with two out.
The Green Knights got a run in the ninth inning on Perry's RBI groundout but the potential tying run was stranded at second base to end the game.
Holgado was 4-for-5 with two runs scored, while
Zach Bostrand was 2-for-4. Perry and DeBruin had two RBI each.
Luke Steebs took a tough loss, allowing just two earned runs in seven-pus innings pitched.
