DE PERE - St. Norbert College split a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader with Wisconsin Lutheran College, winning the opener 18-7 before losing the nightcap 6-5 at Van Alstine Field at Mel Nicks Sports Complex.
The Green Knights scored in every inning in the opener, banging out 19 hits. Wisconsin Lutheran took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning but St. Norbert responded with three runs in the first on a
Matt Perry RBI single, a
Will DeBruin run-scoring groundout and a Levi Crossell RBI single. The Warriors got a run back in the top of the second but St. Norbert came back with five runs on six hits in its half of the inning.
Tyler Pigeon had a steal of home on a double steal,
Trevor Reinhardt had an RBI triple, Perry a sacrifice fly and
A.J. Kisting a two-run single.
St. Norbert pulled away with three runs in the third inning on a two-run home run by Reinhardt and a
Zach Bostrand RBI single. After the Warriors scored once in the fourth, St. Norbert again posted three runs on a two-run single by Reinhardt and a Perry run-scoring single. Wisconsin Lutheran added a run in the fifth, which the Green Knights countered on a solo home run by Kisting. St. Norbert added two runs in the sixth inning on a single by Crosswell and bases-loaded walks by Bostrand and Pigeon. Wisconsin Lutheran scored a pair of consolation runs in the seventh.
Reinhardt was 4-for-4 with four runs scored and five runs batted in. Perry was 3-for-3 with three runs batted in. Bostrand, Crosswell, Kisting and Pigeon all had two hits apiece. Kisting had three runs batted in, while Bostrand and Crosswell had two apiece.
Jason Schroeder was the winning pitcher, allowing eight hits with two walks and six strikeouts in five innings pitched.
In the nightcap, Wisconsin Lutheran scored a run in the first inning. St. Norbert got on the board in the second inning on
Jayden Wendt's double to score Bostrand. The Green Knights added another run in the third inning when
Jaden Holgado's triple scored
Devin Geary. St. Norbert tacked on a run in the sixth inning when Pigeon's double brought around
Will DeBruin.
Wisconsin Lutheran scored twice in the seventh to tie it at 3-3, but St. Norbert pulled ahead when Perry scored from second base on Geary's bunt and a subsequent Warriors' throwing error. Wisconsin Lutheran scored three times in the eighth inning to pull ahead 6-4. St. Norbert scored in the eighth when Geary's single brought in a run, but the Green Knights left two on. St. Norbert would have the potential tying run at second base with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth, but did not tie the game.
Reinhardt and Geary were both 3-for-5, while DeBruin was 2-for-5. Noah Chimelewski took the loss in two innings pitched of relief.
