Green Knights Split Twinbill at Alverno

MILWAUKEE - St. Norbert College returned to the softball diamond and split a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader with Alverno College, winning the opener 19-3 before dropping the nightcap 5-4.

The Green Knights fell behind early in the opener when Alverno scored once in the first inning, but then got a run back in the second on Lilly Haase's RBI single. St. Norbert scored four times in the top of the third, paced by Baleigh Linssen's three-run home run. Andrianna Volz's RBI single gave St. Norbert a 5-1 lead. Alverno got a run in the third to cut it to 5-2.

St. Norbert got single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. A run scored on an error in the fifth and Addison Race had an RBI double in the sixth. Alverno would get a run in the sixth, but the Green Knights blew the game open in the seventh with 12 runs on 10 hits. Christina Paleka and Haase led off the inning with solo home runs. Zoe Zasada added an RBI single and Ava Engwall brought in a run with a bases-loaded walk. Race had a two-run single, Haase a two-run double and Nicole Condon a two-run single. Callie Hellmer finished the uprising with a two-run single.

The Green Knights had 23 hits in the opener. Linssen was 5-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI. Haase was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBI. Paleka was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Allison Ardito, Zasada, Race and Condon all had two hits apiece. Race had three runs scored and three RBI in addition to a complete-game win with no walks and four strikeouts.

In the nightcap, the game was scoreless through three innings until St. Norbert scored twice in the fourth inning on a Kathryn Bergin two-run single. Alverno got a run in the fourth inning with the Green Knights getting a run in the fifth on Zasada's RBI single. The Inferno then scored three times in the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead. St. Norbert tied the game at 4-4 on Bergin's solo home run in the sixth before Alverno went ahead on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.

Bergin was 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Volz was 2-for-3. Amber Johanek took the loss for the Green Knights in 1 1/3 innings pitched of relief.
