DE PERE - St. Norbert College scored three third-period goals en route to a 5-2 win over St. Olaf College in a first-round NCAA Division III Tournament game at Cornerstone Community Center.
The Green Knights (23-6) advance to face Northern Collegiate Hockey Association rival Adrian College on Saturday, March 16, in a national quarterfinal game at Arrington Ice Arena in Adrian, Mich. The win was St. Norbert's 34th all-time in NCAA Division III Tournament play, tying it with Middlebury College for the most by one school. The Green Knights are 25-6 in their last 31 NCAA Tournament games.
St. Norbert and St. Olaf had skated to a 2-2 tie through two periods before the Green Knights broke through to take control. In a delayed-penalty situation, the Green Knights brought an extra attacker on and converted when
Calvin Hanson's toe drag through the slot allowed him to convert for a 3-2 lead with 6:07 gone by in the third period. St. Norbert did not score on the ensuing power play and the Green Knights then killed off a penalty of their own. St. Olaf then put St. Norbert back on the power play at 11:59 but kept the game a one-goal margin.
The Green Knights picked up an insurance goal when
T.J. Koufis skated in as the third man in and took a pass from
Jordan Strand to finish at 16:18 and a two-goal edge. St. Norbert closed out the scoring with an empty-net goal by
Mark Snarr with one minute remaining.
St. Norbert and St. Olaf skated to a scoreless first period in a free-flowing 20 minutes that saw very few stoppages. The Green Knights held a 14-5 shots-on-goal advantage but came up empty at the pay window.
The Green Knights broke the ice early in the second period when
Carter Hottmann scored at the 1:17 mark. He then added his second marker when he scored at 7:15 for a 2-0 lead. The Oles would battle back, getting a power-play goal from Jonathan Panisa at 9:52 and a goal from Jonathan Young at 18:28 to bring things level at 2-2.
Will Stromp had three assists to finish with a three-point game. Hottmann had two goals for two points, while Koufis had one goal and one assist for two points.
St. Norbert outshot St. Olaf 36-20.
Hunter Garvey made 18 saves for the Green Knights, while Thomas Lalonde turned away 31 shots for the Oles.
St. Norbert was 0-for-3 on the power play, while St. Olaf was 1-for-3.
