ADRIAN, Mich. - St. Norbert College pushed hard in the third period but couldn't get the equalizer and eventually fell 5-3 to Adrian College in a NCAA Division III Tournament quarterfinal game at Arrington Ice Arena.
The Green Knights (23-7) outshot the Bulldogs (24-6-1) by an 11-4 margin in the third period but couldn't erase a 4-3 deficit. Adrian registered an empty-net goal by Riley Murphy with 14 seconds remaining to seal the win.
St. Norbert got off to a terrific start when
Carter Hottmann potted a goal just 14 seconds into the game for an early lead. Adrian would tie the game at 8:18 when Ian Amsbaugh scored. The score would remain tied 1-1 into first intermission.
Adrian took a two-goal lead when Matt Couto scored at 2:55 of the second period and Zachary Heintz added a power-play goal at 6:36 for a 3-1 edge. St. Norbert would battled back when Hottmann scored on a delayed penalty at 18:28 and
Adam Stacho posted his 20th goal of the year just 14 seconds later for a 3-3 tie. The Bulldogs would deliver a backbreaker, however, when Murphy scored with 2.3 seconds remaining for a 4-3 lead after two periods.
St. Norbert would get a pair of power-play chances in the third period when the Bulldogs took minors at 4:12 and 14:56 but did not score.
Hottmann finished with two goals for two points, while
Mark Snarr added two assists for two points.
Adrian outshot St. Norbert by a slim 33-32 margin.
Hunter Garvey made 28 saves for the Green Knights, while Dershahn Stewart made 29 saves for the Bulldogs.
St. Norbert was 1-for-3 on the power play, while Adrian was 1-for-2.
