WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - St. Norbert College opened its annual spring-break trip to Florida with a split of a doubleheader against Elms College, dropping the opener 3-1 before taking the nightcap 11-7 at Winter Haven High School.
The Green Knights (2-6) scored one run in the first inning of the opener when
Jaden Holgado scored on a throwing error. That's all the runs St. Norbert would push across despite leaving baserunners on in every inning but the fifth. Elms would score its three runs in the third inning. The Green Knights would get runners to second and third in the top of the seventh but could not tie the game.
Holgado led St. Norbert, going 2-for-2 with two walks.
Cole Bzdawka took the loss for the Green Knights, allowing eight hits in three-plus innings pitched.
In the nightcap, St. Norbert jumped on Elms early with six runs in the bottom of the first.
Trevor Reinhardt had an RBI single, while
Matt Perry followed with a sacrifice fly.
Carson Krumrei had a run-scoring single and
Huck Sprong followed with an RBI double.
Levi Crosswell then made it 6-0 with a two-run double.
Elms would bounce back with four runs in the top of the third, but the Green Knights got a run back in their half of the inning on a
Devin Geary sacrifice fly. Elms tied the game at 7-7 with three runs in the top of the fourth.
St. Norbert pulled ahead with two runs in the fifth on RBI singles from Holgado and
Zach Bostrand. The Green Knights tacked on a pair of insurance runs on a two-run home run by Geary in the sixth.
The Green Knights banged out 17 hits in the nightcap. Holgado was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Sprong was also 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Geary, Reinhardt, Crosswell and Tyler Piegon all had two hits apiece.
Luke Steebs earned the win, allowing no earned runs in 4 1/3 innings of relief. He allowed five hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
