DE PERE - St. Norbert College had its home opener on the last day of winter and dropped a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader to Marian University 5-4 and 9-4 at Miron Construction Field at Mel Nicks Sports Complex.
The Green Knights carried a 4-3 lead into the seventh inning of the opener, but the Sabres took the lead with a pair of unearned runs on a two-out, two-run double by Katelyn Matenaer. St. Norbert would get two runners on with two out in the bottom of the seventh, but could get plate the tying run.
Marian took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. The Green Knights got a run back when
Zoe Zasada's grounder brought in
Allison Ardito. The Sabres would add a run in the top of the third inning, but St. Norbert responded to tie it in their half of the frame. Zasada had another RBI grounder and
Karleigh Linssen's run-scoring single knotted the score at 3-3.
St. Norbert took the lead with a run in the fifth inning, scoring when
Addison Race's single brought around Linssen.
Meghan Gonnering was 2-for-3, while Ardito was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Race, who was 2-for-4, took the tough complete-game loss, allowing six hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
In the nightcap, St. Norbert took a 2-0 lead with single runs in each of the first two innings.
Ava Engwall's double to score Ardito put the Green Knights up 1-0, while Morgan Hansen's second-inning sacrifice fly plated
Morgan Jarvi. Marian would get runs in each of the next two innings to tie it at 2-2 and then broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning to take an 8-2 lead.
The Green Knights got two runs in the sixth inning on a
Lilly Haase run-scoring triple and a Jarvi RBI single. Marian would get a run back in the top of the seventh inning.
St. Norbert was held to five hits.
Savannah Jandrin was charged with the loss for the Green Knights.
