CLERMONT, Fla. - St. Norbert College got its 2024 season underway with a doubleheader against UW-Stout to open its Florida trip, dropping decisions of 8-5 and 6-3 at Legends Fields.
Stout jumped out to an early lead in the opener, scoring three runs in the first inning and once in the second inning. The Blue Devils then added a run in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead. The Green Knights would answer with five runs in their half of the fourth inning.
Christina Paleka got St. Norbert on the board by forcing in a run with a bases-loaded walk.
Ava Engwall then stroked a bases-clearing double to bring the Green Knights to within 5-4.
Meghan Gonnering then drove in Engwall to knot the score at 5-5.
Following scoreless fifth and sixth innings, Stout would break through with three runs in the top of the seventh. The Green Knights were retired in order in their half of the seventh to close out the game.
The Green Knights had three hits in the opener, highlighted by Engwall's three-run double.
Addison Race took the loss, allowing eight runs in 6 2/3 innings pitched.
In the nightcap, it was St. Norbert's turn to take an early lead by plating three runs in the top of the first.
Allison Ardito scored on an error and
Karleigh Linssen then brought home Paleka and
Nicole Condon on a two-run single. Stout would get two runs in the second inning and one run in the fourth inning to tie up the score at 3-3.
Stout broke through in the bottom of the sixth when it scored three times after two outs and nobody on base for the game-winning rally.
The Green Knights had seven hits, with
Zoe Zasada going 2-for-3.
