DE PERE - St. Norbert College ran into a hard-hitting Augustana College squad in the final match of the St. Norbert Tournament and dropped a 3-0 decision at Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center.
The Green Knights (5-4), who finished the tournament 2-1, fell to the 3-0 Vikings (7-1) by scores of 25-22, 25-22, 25-20.
St. Norbert battled from behind most of Set 1, getting back to even at 18-18 on an
Owen Knezevich kill. Augustana scored twice and the Green Knights answered with two points to tie it 20-20 on a
Kaden Kornaus kill. St. Norbert would get back to within 23-22 but the Vikings scored the final two points to take a 1-0 lead.
Augustana pulled out to a 16-9 lead in Set 2 before the Green Knights battled back to trail 22-19, 23-20 and 24-22 before the Vikings again closed out the set. St. Norbert trailed 16-13 in Set 3 before the Vikings went on a 6-3 run to get some breathing room at 22-16 and then finished out the win.
St. Norbert hit .118 for the match, with 34 kills and 21 errors in 110 attempts. Kornaus finished with 12 kills, while Jacob Van Ooyen added seven.
Michael Whitney had 27 assists and two service aces.
Ryan Conway led the back row with nine digs, while Kornaus chipped in with nine digs.
Kade Nelson,
Barry Applewhite and
Mason Werner all had two blocks apiece.
Augustana hit .309, with 38 kills and nine errors in 94 attempts. Aidan Bolen finished with 11 kills for the Vikings.
