St. Norbert Charges Back To Top Adrian

DE PERE - St. Norbert College bounced back to gain a split of a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association series with Adrian College, fashioning a 6-2 win at Cornerstone Community Center.

The Green Knights (16-6, 13-3 NCHA) responded after a 4-1 loss to the No. 2-ranked Bulldogs (17-5-1, 14-2 NCHA) in Friday's series opener by building a 3-0 first-period lead and locking up an important win. The Green Knights still have a shot at clinching a share of the NCHA Peters Cup championship with 36 points heading into next weekend's series at the University of Dubuque. Adrian has 41 points, while Trine University has 37 points. If St. Norbert sweeps Dubuque and Trine takes five points from Adrian in its respective series next weekend, there will be a three-way tie atop the NCHA at 42 points.

St. Norbert got the early jump when Liam Fraser scored 3:08 into the game, getting time and space as the third man in on a 2-on-1 rush by the Green Knights for his 13th goal of the year. The Green Knights added to their lead when Will Stromp registered a power-play goal at 9:40 after going nearly the length of the ice and deking an Adrian defenseman for his seventh goal of the year. Cameron Morris then registered his first collegiate goal when he banged home a rebound off a Fraser shot at 14:47.

The Green Knights pulled ahead 4-0 on a power-play goal by T.J. Koufis at 11:41 of the second period, with Koufis taking a long outlet pass at the blue line and skated in alone on the goaltender for his ninth goal of the year. Adrian would get back into the game with a pair of goals by Jacob Suede at 12:10 and Zachary Heintz on a power-play goal at 13:01.

St. Norbert kept Adrian off the scoreboard in the third period and salted the game away with empty-net goals from Fraser at 16:48 and Brock Baker at 19:46.

Fraser finished with two goals - now a team-high 14 on the year - and one assist for a three-point game. Baker had one goal and two assists for three points. Stromp and Morris had assists along with their goals for two-point games, while Mark Snarr had two assists for two points.

Adrian outshot St. Norbert 33-27. Hunter Garvey turned in a 31-save performance for the Green Knights, while Dershahn Stewart made 21 stops for the Bulldogs.

St. Norbert was 2-for-4 on the power play, while Adrian was 1-for-3.
