JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – St. Norbert College wrapped up its opening weekend with a 16-13 loss to former Midwest Conference foe Illinois College in a non-conference game at Joe Brooks Field.
The Green Knights (1-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a home run by
Matt Perry. St. Norbert would hold a 2-0 lead until the Blueboys (3-0) registered six runs in the bottom of the third to take a 6-2 edge.
St. Norbert came back with two runs in the fourth inning on
Tyler Pigeon's two-run double to make it a 6-4 game. The Green Knights added four runs in the sixth on a run-scoring single by
A.J. Kisting, a two-run home run by
Devin Geary and a solo home run by
Jaden Holgado for an 8-6 lead.
Illinois College came back with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to push ahead 13-8 and tacked on a run in the seventh to make it 14-8. The Green Knights answered with four runs in the top of the eighth when
Will DeBruin and
Carson Krumrei were each hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and
Matt Schuch and Geary followed with RBI singles to cut it to 14-12. St. Norbert left the bases loaded in the inning.
The Blueboys scored a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 16-12 lead. St. Norbert got a run in on a fielder's choice grounder by Kisting but the game would end with the Green Knights again stranding the bases loaded.
St. Norbert totaled 11 hits in the game. Geary was 3-for-7 with a home run and three RBI, while
Trevor Reinhardt was 2-for-6. Holgado and Perry each homered.
