DE PERE – St. Norbert College won a tightly contested game with Calvin University, pulling away late 72-63 to complete an undefeated weekend at the Nicolet National Bank Tip-Off Tournament at Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center.
Macey Mercer (pictured) and Emma Morrisey both scored five points in the early minutes of the game, giving St. Norbert a one-point lead. Calvin would come within one at the end of the quarter, but a strong 10-2 run to open the second quarter gave the Green Knights some distance. Kalina Winslow's three pointer gave St. Norbert its biggest lead in the game up to that point, putting the Green Knights up by nine.
The Knights were able to score a buzzer beater to end the second quarter, bringing the St. Norbert lead down to eight.
Taylor Thiry, who scored a game-high 21 points, helped St. Norbert keep its lead in the third quarter with eight points in the ten minutes following intermission. Despite this, Calvin found themselves only down by three following dominance in the paint in the third quarter.
The Knights would then take their first lead since the first quarter after going on a 7-0 run in the fourth quarter, but another bucket from Thiery tied the game at 56.
The two teams traded leads for the next several minutes, but clutch baskets from Thiery and Oakley Witteck were enough to regain a three-point lead.
Calvin was unable to find any points with four minutes left to play, going empty on their last nine possessions.
St. Norbert shot 46.3 percent from the floor (25-for-54) and outrebounded the Knights 34-33. The Green Knights scored 21 points off turnovers, while Calvin scored 14. Mercer recorded four of the 11 steals for the Green Knights.
Thiry led the way with 21 points and four rebounds, while Witteck had 10 points and seven assists. Casey Jepson scored nine coming off the bench, while Mercer and Winslow both added seven points.
