DE PERE - St. Norbert College rang up eight goals in its season opener as the Green Knights romped to an 8-4 victory over St. Olaf College in a wild non-conference game at Cornerstone Community Center.
The Green Knights, ranked No. 5 in the USCHO.com Division III Poll, raced out to a 7-3 lead after two periods and had eight different goal scorers in a contest featuring two teams which have met in the last two NCAA Tournaments.
St. Norbert got off to a quick start when
Ethan Byrne scored 2 minutes 14 seconds into his first college game, finishing off a rush from a
Cameron Morris assist. The Oles would counter just 29 seconds later when Tyler Green scored at 2:43. The Green Knights would cash in their only power-play goal of the night when
Logan Dombrowsky scored at 5:33.
Blake Ulve, also playing in his first college game, added an unassisted marker at 6:47 for a 3-1 lead. The Oles' Jonathan Young scored at 9:02, but the Green Knights boosted their edge out back to two when Morris scored at 15:15. St. Norbert took the 4-2 lead into the first intermission.
The Oles climbed back to within one goal on Tyler Cooper's goal at 5:19 of the second period, but
Jack Hillman registered his first collegiate goal less than a minute later with a score at 6:07 for a 5-3 lead.
Calvin Hanson kept the scoring going with a goal at 9:49 of the second, while
Dayton Deics followed at 11:26 for a 7-3 nod that carried into the second rest stop.
The third period was relatively uneventful, with
Gustav Portillo scoring at 3:17 and the Oles' Nick Halton finishing at 18:35.
Ulve finished with a four-point night in his college debut, adding three assists to his goal. Dombrowsky and Morris each had one goal and one assist for two points, while
Curtis Hammond,
Byron Hartley and
Brock Baker all had two-assist, two-point games.
St. Norbert outshot St. Olaf 36-25.
Hunter Garvey made 21 saves for the Green Knights. Thomas Lalonde started for St. Olaf and made 12 saves before being relieved after Hanson's second-period goal. Tyler Laureault made 16 saves in relief for the Oles.
St. Norbert was 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Oles were 0-for-4.
