Game Recap: Men’s Ice Hockey |

St. Norbert Holds Off Lawrence In Series Opener

APPLETON - St. Norbert College built a pair of three-goal leads and went on to fashion a 4-2 win over Lawrence University to open a home-and-home Northern Collegiate Hockey Association series at Appleton Ice Center.

The Green Knights (14-5, 11-2 NCHA) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Carter Hottmann scored a power-play goal at 8:17 and Jordan Strand followed moments later with his first goal of the season, scoring at 9:54.

St. Norbert had a 5-on-3 power-play opportunity to open the second period and capitalized, with Liam Fraser scoring his 12th goal of the season when he finished 1:30 into the period. Lawrence would get a goal back when Ethan Beaumont scored at 14:31. The Green Knights would carry a 3-1 lead into second intermission.

T.J. Koufis scored for the seventh time this season when he gave the Green Knights a 4-1 lead at 3:16 of the third period. Lawrence would get a goal back when Kyle Gierman registered a power-play marker at 5:54. The game would remain 4-2 despite some action in the final two minutes when the Vikings had an extra attacker on for a 6-on-4 opportunity. An apparent Lawrence goal with just over a minute remaining was waved off and a subsequent bench minor on the Vikings negated the power play, with St. Norbert running the clock out from there.

Hottmann had an assist to finish with two points while Adam Stacho scored two assists for two points.

St. Norbert outshot Lawrence 36-29. Hunter Garvey made 27 saves, including 15 in the third period, for the Green Knights. Nolan Mahaffey made 32 saves for Lawrence.

The Green Knights were 2-for-5 on the power play, while the Vikings were 1-for-5.
