CHICAGO - St. Norbert College had decisive advantages in the first and fourth quarters en route to an 86-61 win over Illinois Institute of Technology in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at Keating Sports Center.
The Green Knights (9-9, 6-3 NACC) outscored the Scarlet Hawks 24-4 in the first quarter. Illinois Tech got back to within six points in the third quarter, but a 31-18 scoring edge in the fourth quarter sealed the St. Norbert win.
St. Norbert got the early jump with an 11-0 run to open the game, with
Emma Morrisey scoring on the game's first possession, followed by a
Kalina Winslow 3-pointer.
Taylor Thiry followed with a pair of free throws and a basket inside, while
Rose Hahn converted a fastbreak layup to cap the spurt. Morrisey converted a conventional three-point play for a 17-2 lead and a Winslow trey just before the buzzer put the visitor up 24-4.
Illinois Tech got to within 11 points twice in the second quarter before settling on a 36-22 halftime deficit. The Scarlet Hawks trailed 41-25 with 8:07 left in the third quarter after
Macey Mercer hit a 3-pointer, but the host went on a 10-0 run to get to within 41-35 with 5:15 left in the period.
Casey Jepson's 3-pointer pushed St. Norbert's lead back to 51-38 with 2:30 left in the quarter, after which the Green Knights led 55-43.
St. Norbert made 12 of 18 (66.7 percent) field-goal attempts in the fourth quarter to pull away. The Green Knights led 62-47 with 7:50 left before going on an 11-0 run over the next 2:13 to take a 73-47 edge and seal the win.
The Green Knights were 30-for-59 (50.8 percent) from the floor for the game and committed just 11 turnovers. Morrisey finished with 21 points, while Thiry added 18 points and 10 rebounds. Jepson totaled 15 points off the bench, while Winslow posted 11 points.
Illinois Tech shot 35.1 percent (20-for-57) from the floor. Julia Bucci led the Scarlet Hawks with 24 points.
