GENEVA, N.Y. - St. Norbert College improved to 3-0 on the young season - its best start in program history - thanks to a 3-0 win over Penn State University-Behrend and a 3-1 triumph over Carlow University at the Hobart College Tournament at Bristol Gymnasium.
The Green Knights topped Penn State-Behrend, the pre-season favorite to win the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, 27-25, 25-16, 25-16. St. Norbert then topped Carlow 21-25, 25-14, 25-22, 25-15.
St. Norbert pulled out a hard-fought deuce set to open against Penn State-Behrend, with each team trading points from 19-19 through 25-25. The Green Knights pulled out the set thanks to kills by
Michael Whitney and
Kaden Kornaus for a 1-0 lead. The Green Knights led 9-6 in Set 2 before going on an 8-2 run to take a 17-8 lead and eventually going up 2-0. St. Norbert then saw an 8-6 lead in Set 3 balloon into a 17-10 advantage thanks to a 9-4 run.
Jackson Corcoran's kill on match point sealed the win.
The Green Knights hit .280, their fourth-highest percentage in program history, converting 39 kills against 16 errors in 82 attempts. Kornaus and
Owen Knezevich each had nine kills, while Corcoran had seven.
Michael Whitney finished with 27 assists, while Corcoran had two service aces.
Ryan Conway had a team-high eight digs, with Kornaus posting two blocks.
Against Carlow, St. Norbert rebounded from a tough first set to take a lead of 17-5 in Set 2 and knot the match at 1-1. The Green Knights appeared in dire straits in Set 3, trailing 22-20, but scored five straight points to take a 2-1 lead.
Mason Werner, Kornaus and
Bennett Kornaus all had kills, while
Bennett Kornaus closed out the set with a service ace. St. Norbert never trailed in Set 4, building a 16-8 lead and cruising to the win.
St. Norbert hit .220, with 41 kills against 19 errors in 100 attempts. A total of 15 players saw action in the match, with 11 registering at least one kill.
Mason Werner had nine kills, while
Kade Nelson and
Bennett Kornaus each finished with seven. Whitney had 27 assists. The Green Knights posted a school-record 15 service aces, with
Bennett Kornaus netting five and Werner three.
Kaden Kornaus had six digs, while Werner had five blocks - including four solo.
