DE PERE - St. Norbert College rallied from a two-goal deficit to salvage two valuable points in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings with a 2-2 tie and subsequent shootout win over Aurora University at Cornerstone Community Center.
The Green Knights (12-4-1, 7-0-1 NCHA) trailed 1-0 in the three-round shootout after two rounds.
Lexi Bonfe scored in the bottom of the third to force the shootout into sudden death. Aurora's Cara Cook scored in the top of the fourth, but
Jo Mahlum followed with a goal to force a second extra round. St. Norbert goaltender
Brynn Waisman turned away Aurora's Peyton Elliott in the top of the fifth, and the Green Knights claimed a 3-2 shootout win when
Morgan Olson finished to cap the rally.
St. Norbert got off to a slow start, coming up empty on three first-period power-play chances in a scoreless first period. Aurora then scored at 3:21 of the second period on an Elliott goal. The Spartans doubled their lead on an Erin Campbell power-play goal at 8:09. St. Norbert got back into the game when
Courtnie Hogan snapped a wrister past Aurora goaltender Marie Dedert at 13:41. The score remained 2-1 heading into second intermission.
The Green Knights took advantage of their lone third-period power-play chance when Hogan scored again - her 10th on the season - when she finished a wraparound shot at 7:02.
Each team had only one shot on goal in the overtime session, with Aurora getting 1:25 of power-play time.
Aurora outshot St. Norbert 24-22, but the Green Knights had a 9-2 edge in the third period. Waisman finished with 22 saves for the Green Knights, while Dedert made 20 stops for the Spartans.
St. Norbert was 1-for-5 on the power play, while Aurora was 1-for-4. It was only the third power-play goal allowed by St. Norbert through 17 games this season.
